The New York Giants are expected to add another experienced voice to John Harbaugh’s coaching staff, with veteran NFL assistant Greg Roman reportedly joining the organization.
According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, Roman is expected to receive the title of Senior Offensive Assistant. While the official title has yet to be announced by the team, it’s widely believed his responsibilities will include serving as the Giants’ Running Game Coordinator, working alongside offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as New York reshapes its offensive identity.
Roman most recently coached with the Los Angeles Chargers before becoming available this offseason. His arrival would reunite him with Harbaugh, a partnership that helped produce some of the NFL’s most productive rushing offenses during their time together with the Baltimore Ravens.
A Familiar Face for John Harbaugh
This wouldn’t be the first time Harbaugh and Roman have worked together.
During their years in Baltimore, Roman helped build one of the league’s most physical rushing attacks. His offenses consistently ranked among the NFL’s best on the ground, utilizing gap-blocking concepts and creative run designs that maximized the strengths of both the offensive line and quarterback.
It’s no secret Harbaugh wants the Giants to become a more physical football team, and Roman’s background fits that philosophy perfectly.
Expected to Lead the Running Game
Although Matt Nagy is expected to oversee the offense as coordinator, Roman appears set to handle many of the responsibilities associated with the Giants’ rushing attack.
According to Art Stapleton’s report, his official title will be Senior Offensive Assistant, but many around the league expect Roman to function as New York’s Running Game Coordinator once the coaching staff is finalized.
If that’s the case, the Giants would have Nagy focusing on the passing game and quarterback development while Roman builds the physical rushing attack Harbaugh has always valued.
Success with Mobile Quarterbacks
Roman’s greatest success came while coordinating Baltimore’s offense around Lamar Jackson.
During Jackson’s 2019 MVP season, Baltimore featured one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses as Jackson accounted for 43 total touchdowns, including 36 through the air and seven on the ground, while throwing just six interceptions.
Although Jaxson Dart isn’t the same type of runner as Jackson, his athleticism gives Roman another quarterback capable of extending plays and making defenses account for his mobility.
Previous Stops in Baltimore and Los Angeles
Roman’s coaching résumé also includes a few challenges.
After several successful seasons in Baltimore, the Ravens’ offense began to lose momentum, and Roman departed the organization following the 2022 season. He then joined the Los Angeles Chargers, where he spent two seasons before becoming available this offseason.
Despite those recent stops, Roman remains one of the NFL’s most respected run-game architects, making him a logical fit for a Giants team looking to establish a more physical identity under John Harbaugh.
Final Thoughts
The Giants continue to surround John Harbaugh with experienced coaches he knows and trusts.
While Greg Roman’s hiring had not yet been made official on February 13, all signs pointed toward him joining the staff in a significant offensive role. If he ultimately assumes running game coordinator duties, the Giants will be adding one of the NFL’s most accomplished run-game designers as they attempt to establish a tougher, more physical offense in 2026.
