Giants’ Defense and Special Teams Woes: Breaking Down the 21-18 Loss to Washington.
The New York Giants fell short in a 21-18 defeat against the Washington Commanders. While there were some positives, key mistakes ultimately cost them the game. Here’s a breakdown of what went wrong and what needs improvement heading into next week.
Defensive Struggles.
The Giants’ defense had some bright spots but was far from perfect. For starters, allowing over 200 yards rushing is unacceptable. Brian Robinson Jr. led the charge with 133 yards, followed by Jayden Daniels with 44, and Austin Ekeler adding 38. The defense will need to fix this if they hope to win in the future.
The defensive line managed to sack Jayden Daniels five times. However, stars Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux failed to make any impact on that front. Their lack of sacks is concerning. Shane Bowen must address these issues before the next game.
On a positive note, Dru Phillips had a strong performance with 12 tackles and a sack. But, the poor tackling overall by the defense has to be cleaned up quickly.
Offensive Positives and Setbacks.
Daniel Jones had a decent game, throwing two touchdown passes. He didn’t reach 200 yards passing, but he wasn’t the reason for the loss. He’ll need to build on this performance next week.
Devin Singletary was a highlight on the offense, coming close to 100 yards rushing and scoring his first touchdown with the Giants. However, his fumble in the third quarter hurt the team’s momentum.
Rookie Malik Nabers had his first 100-yard game, with 123 yards and his first NFL touchdown. Unfortunately, his drop on a crucial fourth down killed the Giants’ hopes of extending their final drive.
Special Teams Management Issues.
Special teams were another problem area for the Giants. Knowing that kicker Graham Gano was dealing with a groin injury, the team failed to activate Jude McAtamney. Not having a reliable kicker available hurt the Giants, as they missed out on five to six points from field goals and extra points. It was a costly oversight by the coaching staff.
Looking Ahead.
This was a winnable game, but the Giants let it slip away. With six tough matchups ahead against playoff contenders, the road doesn’t get any easier. The Giants will need to tighten up across the board to avoid a similar fate in the coming weeks.
