Big Blue March Madness

by James Doino

1990 Giants vs. 1956 Giants

When we entered the teams into the Bleed Big Blue simulator, we didn’t think the ’56 team had any chance.

We were wrong. This was the best match-up of round one. Old school vs. Older school.

Robustelli, Grier and Huff made Simms miserable all day with constant pressure and vicious hits. Hits that would be sure to draw penalties in today’s game, but not in our simulator…

This was a FG kickers match up for the 1st half, as Ben Agajanian kicked 3 first half FG’s for the 56 squad, but was countered each time by Matt Bahr.

9-9 at the Half.

To start the 3rd the threesome of Gifford, Triplett and Alex Webster confused the 90’s defensive unit with running play after running leading to a 15 yard run by Gifford for the 1st TD of the game.

The game stood that way until late in the 3rd quarter when Parcells, looking for a spark for his offense, called a fake punt that Gary Reasons ran for 1st down. That sparked the 1990 team and led to their 1st TD of the game, a 7 yard strike from Simms to Stephen Baker.

16-16 Going into the 4th….

Charlie Connerly came out slinging on the next drive and hit Gifford on a wheel route where he cleanly beat Steve Deossie to get up the sideline for a 58 yard TD.

Simms answered right back with 6 straight completions starting with a 3rd and 8 from is his own 18, when he fired a 22 yard strike to Bavaro. The 90 team marched up field using a mix of run and pass, and on a 2nd down and 4 from the ‘56 teams 19 yard line, Simms hit Mark Ingram on a corner route to tie it up.

23-23 5 minutes left…. It looked like upset city as Conerly drove the’ 56 team back into FG range, but with 15 seconds left,

Agajanian missed a 33 yard FG, and the game was sent to OT.

In OT, the 56 team won the toss and elected to receive. On a 2nd and 8 from their own 23, Triplett was rocked by a blitzing LT as he was handed the ball from Conerly that led to a fumble. It was recovered by Eric Dorsey, and conjured up memories of when LT forced the Roger Craig fumble in the 1990 NFC championship game; it was Dorsey who recovered that fumble as well.

Two plays later, Matt Bahr came onto the field and kicked the 90 team to victory…
